SOUTHERN BOOKCRAFTS CLUB

More Details...

The Southern Bookcrafts Club meets in a small industrial unit in the north-east of Winchester, ten minutes’ walk from the bus station or one minutes’ drive from Junction 9 of the M3. Our room is set up as a bindery, with tables, tools and materials for the binding and repair of books. The Club welcomes new members. At present, we meet on Fridays from 0930 to 1600 but the use of the bindery is flexible and members will try to adapt to the needs of any new members who can only manage sessions at other times.

A wide range of projects are tackled. Some members concentrate on restoring and conserving old books. Others prefer re-binding new or recent editions of their own or belonging to friends. Another combines binding with an interest in desk-top publishing, producing books from start to finish. There are bindings by our members in the Ordnance Survey Library, the British Library, the Winchester Cathedral Library and other local and London libraries.

What does the club offer new members? First, guidance from experienced members for planned initial projects; after that discussion and support for your own projects. Second, access to special materials. Materials costs are small; generally one member buys in quantity and sells on to others in small lots. Finally the chance to share the more expensive tools; by sharing, we have equipped a very reasonable bindery, capable of supporting fully professional work. If you care about books and are interested in joining us, contact the Secretary Jack Walters  on 023-8026-6969 or

jwalters@care4free.net.

He can  give you further details or can arrange for you to drop into one of our Friday sessions, where members will be happy to show you the bindery and the work in progress. Perhaps you will find yourself on the threshold of a long and fruitful involvement on bookcrafts.
